January 2024 Newsletter - A New Year for Washington D.C. Gaels

In 2023, Washington D.C. witnessed a remarkable celebration of Gaelic culture within the DMV region. The year was packed with several unforgettable events, including the Capital Irish Film Festival, the Ballyshaners St. Patrick's Day Parade, Ireland on the Wharf, watch parties at O'Connell's Bar, EU Open House at the Irish Embassy, Spring & Summer new player days, away games, and the growth of all codes, with a particular focus on youth development. The year also saw both football teams clinching Mid-Atlantic Division trophies, which added to the excitement. However, the moment of the year was the triumph of our very own 2023 USGAA Junior C Ladies Football Champions, which made us all proud to be D.C. Gaels!

2024 Executive Committee Elected

The leadership of D.C. Gaels has undergone a significant transition as we venture into 2024. It's worth noting that all but one officer decided to step down from their roles to make way for fresh faces and new ideas. The following were elected to the Executive Committee at our AGM in December:

  • Chairperson: Ronan Kelly

  • Vice Chairperson: Eli Webster

  • Secretary: Candice Stone

  • Treasurer: Michael Brophy

  • Registrar: John McHale

  • Youth Development Officer: Rory Coffey

  • Public Relations Officer: TJ Fitzgerald

Our thanks to the outgoing board of Patrick McCabe, Emmet McKeown, Christina Petrocelli, Richard O’Rourke, Ian Hutchinson, and Jillian Kelly for their work in 2023. Their contributions have been instrumental to the club's success, and we are incredibly grateful for their commitment.

As they step away, we would like to extend a special recognition to three of those outgoing members for their years of service on the Executive Committee. Patrick, Ian, and Richard have served for 4, 4, and 5 years respectively. Their leadership throughout the pandemic and beyond has been unwavering, and their dedication to the club has set a high standard for their successors to follow.
